Beyond the UTI: Discover What Cranberry May Do for Your Microbiome

Most people associate cranberry with urinary tract health. But cranberry has another emerging story—gut health.

Scientists are increasingly studying the relationship between cranberry, the trillions of microorganisms living in our digestive tract, and the compounds those microorganisms produce.

Cranberries naturally contain a unique combination of polyphenols, proanthocyanidins (PACs), flavonoids and complex carbohydrates, including oligosaccharides. These compounds don't simply disappear after we consume them. Many reach the intestinal tract, where they can interact with our gut microbiota.

1. Cranberry May Help Feed Beneficial Gut Bacteria

A 2024 human study examining a cranberry extract rich in polyphenols and oligosaccharides found significant changes in participants' gut microbiota after only four days, including an increase in Bifidobacterium — a “bifidogenic effect.”

2. Cranberry May Support Butyrate-Producing Bacteria

The same study found increases in several butyrate-producing bacteria. Butyrate is a short-chain fatty acid that feeds colon cells and supports normal intestinal barrier function.

3. Cranberry Provides More Than PACs

Whole cranberry's polyphenols and dietary fibers appear to work together within the gut microbiome, potentially influencing microbial populations, SCFA production and barrier function.

4. Your Microbiome Helps Unlock Cranberry

Many dietary polyphenols aren't fully absorbed upstream; they travel to the colon where microbes transform them into metabolites, and the polyphenols in turn influence the microbiome — a bidirectional relationship.
